Zooz ZST39 800 Long Range Z-Wave Stick

Quick verdict

The ZST39 is the cheapest sensible way to get an 800-series Z-Wave controller with Long Range into Home Assistant. Z-Wave JS drives it locally, Zooz names Home Assistant as a supported platform, and S2 and SmartStart are included. Two things to know before ordering. Zooz's spec sheet shows SDK 7.18.3 firmware while Home Assistant now recommends 7.23.2 or newer for 800-series sticks, and the over-the-wire update is a Windows-only job with PC Controller. And Zooz says restoring an NVM backup from a 500- or 700-series stick will brick it, so moving an existing network means re-including every device. On 2026-09-06 the main retailer had it sold out in every variant. I haven't run this one; the notes come from the spec sheet, the Home Assistant integration docs and what other owners report.

Standout: Inexpensive 800-series Z-Wave controller with Long Range, S2 and SmartStart, from the same brand that makes most of the site's recommended Z-Wave devices.

• Zooz markets it for expert users and the main retail listing was sold out when I checked

• Home Assistant users building a new Z-Wave network on Z-Wave JS who want Long Range in the toolbox
• buyers who prefer a plain Z-Wave stick over a dual-radio one
• Zooz-heavy homes that want the matching 800 LR controller

Avoid if

• you plan to migrate a 500- or 700-series network by NVM backup restore
• you do not have access to a Windows PC for the firmware update
• you want Zigbee on the same stick (look at the Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro instead)

Privacy and local-control notes

A radio on a USB stick. Everything happens inside Z-Wave JS on your own machine; the only outside contact is downloading firmware files from Zooz, which requires registering the stick.

Price notes: Zooz's own product page shows no price and sends buyers to The Smartest House, where on 2026-09-06 the stick was listed at $28.95 (regular $39.95) with every variant, US/CA/MX, EU/UK and open-box, showing sold out. Budget band when in stock; check availability before planning a migration around it. Amazon's Zooz store had it in stock at $39.95 on 2026-09-07 - that is the regular price rather than a markup, so it is the channel to use while the direct reseller is dry.
