About this site
Local Smart Home Guide exists for one reason: a smart home should keep working when the internet doesn't.

Who runs this
This site is written and maintained by one person — call me the Local Enthusiast. I run a real, lived-in Home Assistant setup: self-hosted hardware, Zigbee and Z-Wave meshes, Thread devices, locally recorded cameras, and local voice control. The recommendations here come out of that daily use, not a press release.
The site is independent. There are no sponsorships, no review units in exchange for coverage, and no paid placements — nobody can buy a spot in a guide.
What "local-first" means here
A device earns a recommendation when it can do its job on your network without phoning home: local control through Home Assistant (or open protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread/Matter, or a documented LAN API), no mandatory account, and no feature held hostage by a server you don't own. Cloud features can be a bonus — they should never be a requirement.
Devices that can't meet that bar but are still interesting end up in the cloud-only section, clearly labeled.
How products get picked and verified
Every product page starts from manufacturer documentation and is cross-checked against Home Assistant integration docs and community databases (Zigbee2MQTT, community forums) before it's published. Specs, protocols, and integration claims are re-audited on a rolling basis, and pages carry a "last checked" date. When something is discontinued, hard to find, or has a known caveat, the page says so plainly.
Mistakes still happen — catalogs drift, firmware changes, products get revised. If you spot an error, tell me and it gets fixed.
How the site makes money
Some outbound links are affiliate links — most commonly Amazon. As an Amazon Associate, this site earns from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate status never decides what gets recommended: plenty of top picks here (OpenSprinkler, OpenGarage, DoorBird, and others) aren't on Amazon at all.
