Temperature and humidity sensors are usually the first Zigbee devices people add to Home Assistant: they’re cheap, sip battery, and unlock useful automations - bathroom fan on high humidity, freezer alarm, “the office is too hot” notifications, mold-risk tracking. Zigbee is the right fit here because a single coordinator handles dozens of them locally, with no cloud account and no per-device Wi-Fi clutter.

All of the picks below run as real Zigbee sensors on ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT through a coordinator like a SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus or ConBee III, and none of them need a vendor cloud. One caveat before you buy: the Aqara W100 at number two is dual-protocol and ships in Thread firmware, so it takes a one-time switch in the Aqara Home app before it will join a Zigbee network at all. Buy the SONOFF SNZB-02D; as of August 2026 it is both the best of these and the cheapest, which also makes it the answer for covering the whole house. The Aqara puck is the pick when you want pressure readings or the tiniest sensor, and it’s the one I run myself (5/5 in my review). The Third Reality is for people who prefer AAA batteries over coin cells. Step up to the Aqara W100 if you want a high-accuracy display plus built-in buttons, remembering the one-time protocol switch. I haven’t run the SONOFF, Third Reality or W100; those three are ranked on the spec sheets and what I’ve read from people who own one.

Ranked: best Zigbee temp/humidity sensors

1. SONOFF SNZB-02D

The best all-rounder. It uses a Swiss-made sensor element rated at ±0.2 °C and ±2 % RH, and - crucially for a bedside or hallway - it has a clear 2.5-inch LCD that shows the readings at a glance, so it’s useful even when you’re not looking at a dashboard. It pairs cleanly with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT and runs a long time on its coin cell. (Ignore the marketing about cloud history; on Home Assistant you just use your own Recorder/long-term statistics.) For most people this is the one to buy.

2. Aqara Climate Sensor W100

A premium pick that’s more than a sensor. The W100 reports temperature (±0.2 °C) and humidity (±2 % RH) on a sharp LCD, and adds three physical buttons (single/double/long press, nine actions total) you can map to automations - so it doubles as a scene controller. It’s flexible on protocol: one and the same device runs either Zigbee 3.0 or Thread (Matter), though never both at once. It ships in Thread firmware, so pairing it to ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT means a one-time protocol switch in the Aqara Home app - no Aqara hub required. In Thread mode it connects through a Thread border router and the Matter integration. Note it measures temperature and humidity only - it is not an air-quality sensor.

3. Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor

The classic tiny Aqara puck, and the one I run in my own house. No screen, but it also reports barometric pressure, it’s extremely small, and it’s cheap enough to put in every room. Zigbee - Aqara’s own spec sheet lists this older WSDCGQ11LM as plain Zigbee, not Zigbee 3.0 - with great Home Assistant support and battery life measured in years. The usual Aqara caveat applies: pair it to a generic coordinator for local control, and keep a Zigbee router device nearby so it stays on the mesh.

4. Third Reality Temperature & Humidity Sensor

The AAA-battery alternative. A Zigbee 3.0 sensor rated ±1 °C, which is plenty for fan and comfort automations, with clean ZHA/Zigbee2MQTT support and about a year on two AAA cells - and those AAAs, rather than a coin cell, are the real reason to pick it. It also has its own segment LCD - basic and unlit, but readable at arm’s length. Just don’t buy it expecting a bargain: at about $25 (checked August 2026) it currently costs more than every other sensor here except the W100, including the better-specced SNZB-02D. Prices move, so check - but rank it on the batteries, not the sticker.

How to choose

If you want a big, glanceable readout, the SONOFF SNZB-02D (2.5-inch LCD) and Aqara W100 (3.4-inch LCD) have the largest screens; the Third Reality sensor’s LCD is smaller and unlit.

For blanketing many rooms cheaply, at current prices (August 2026) the SONOFF SNZB-02D at about $16 is both the top pick and the cheapest, an unusual alignment, so take it. The Aqara puck (~$20) earns its spot when you want barometric pressure or the smallest possible form factor. Pressure is more useful than it looks once you track its rate of change rather than the current reading; this weather-based migraine early-warning system is one way to act on it. If you want a sensor that’s also a button, the W100 is unique here.

On accuracy, the SNZB-02D and W100 both use high-quality elements rated ±0.2 °C. The cheaper picks are less precise, ±0.3 °C on the Aqara puck and ±1 °C on the Third Reality, but fine for everyday automations. None of these measure anything beyond temperature, humidity and (on the Aqara puck) barometric pressure; choosing an air quality sensor for Home Assistant is a separate decision and a different set of devices. And they are all battery end devices that depend on mains-powered Zigbee routers (smart plugs, bulbs) to relay, so a sparse mesh is the usual cause of “sensor went unavailable.”

Covering every room cheaply

Before you buy one per room, look at what already reports temperature, because several rooms often come free. Philips Hue motion sensors (indoor and outdoor) carry a temperature sensor, the Everything Presence One reports temperature and humidity alongside presence, and Zigbee motion sensors like the frient Motion Sensor Pro include a reading too. A smart thermostat covers its own location, and ecobee’s remote sensors add a few more rooms, with the caveat that ecobee reaches Home Assistant through its cloud API rather than locally.

For the remaining rooms, the cheapest per-room option on Zigbee is a display-less sensor. The SONOFF SNZB-02D above is the pick when you want the screen; its screenless sibling, the SNZB-02P, uses the same ±0.2 °C element on a CR2477 that Sonoff rates for years of battery life, and the Third Reality Temperature and Humidity Lite is the cheaper AAA-battery variant of the Third Reality sensor. One coordinator hosts dozens of them, as long as the mesh has mains-powered routers between the coordinator and the far rooms.

Where the Zigbee mesh does not reach, or you would rather not run a coordinator at all, two Wi-Fi routes work. The Shelly H&T Gen3 reports temperature and humidity straight into the local Shelly integration with no hub; Wi-Fi sensors cost more per room and add clients to your network, so they suit the odd dead spot rather than whole-house coverage. The other is a DIY ESPHome node: an ESP32 with a cheap BME280 or SHT sensor reports directly to Home Assistant for a few dollars per node, needs mains power instead of batteries, and is the cheapest per-room option of all if you do not mind a little assembly.

All of them run locally with Home Assistant, with no cloud required.
