Best smart buttons and remotes for Home Assistant
The Aqara Wireless Mini Switch is the button I run and the one to buy first. Third Reality for the cheapest Zigbee, Zooz ZEN34 on Z-Wave, IKEA BILRESA on Thread. Plus Zigbee keypads for scene control and how to get clear feedback from a press.

If Home Assistant is the brain of your smart home, buttons and remotes are the fingertips: a physical press to trigger a scene, toggle lights, or fire an automation without reaching for your phone. The catch is that “smart button” gets slapped on a lot of different things. This guide sticks to buttons that work locally with Home Assistant, and names the radio each one speaks - because that’s what decides whether it keeps working when the internet is down.
Most good local buttons are still Zigbee, and that is where this guide spends most of its time. It is no longer the only option, though. Z-Wave has a good battery remote if your hub already speaks that radio, and Matter-over-Thread buttons arrived in force when IKEA moved its remote line over in early 2026. Wi-Fi buttons remain mostly cloud-tethered. (If you want a fuller control surface than a single button, the Zigbee keypads section further down covers those.)
The Aqara Wireless Mini Switch is the all-round local button and the one I run; the Third Reality Smart Button is the cheapest reliable Zigbee one, the Zooz ZEN34 covers Z-Wave houses, and the IKEA BILRESA is the cheapest of the lot if you already run Thread. The Aqara is the one running in my house; I haven’t run the BILRESA, the Third Reality button or the ZEN34, so those three picks rest on the spec sheets and other owners’ write-ups.
Zigbee buttons (the local-first default)
These pair to a local Zigbee coordinator via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and fire events (single / double / long press) straight into Home Assistant. No cloud, no account.
Aqara Wireless Mini Switch / Wireless Remote Switch H1
The Aqara Wireless Mini Switch is a compact, single-button Zigbee remote that exposes single, double, and long-press actions. It pairs to ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT directly (an Aqara hub is optional, not required). The newer Wireless Remote Switch H1 is Zigbee 3.0 with a satisfying click, longer battery life, and lower latency; by default the H1 only sends single-press, but you can unlock double/long press in ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. It comes in single- and double-button versions, and the double version can also fire an action when both are pressed together, giving you up to seven actions on one tidy device. Worth knowing before you shop: Aqara lists the H1 on its EU site and has no US product page for it, so US buyers are looking at import stock, while the Mini Switch is a current US SKU. I run the Mini Switch and gave it 5/5 in my owner review. Third Reality Smart Button
The Third Reality Smart Button is a Zigbee 3.0 button (it is not a Z-Wave device, despite what some listings imply). It works directly with ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT, exposes single/double/hold, runs on AAA batteries for years, and is one of the cheapest reliable buttons you can buy. A Zigbee coordinator is required and sold separately. No HomeKit support natively, but you can expose it through Home Assistant’s HomeKit bridge.
Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch
If you’re already running a Philips Hue Bridge, the Tap Dial Switch is excellent: four tap zones plus a rotary dial for smooth dimming. It’s Zigbee, powered by a single replaceable CR2032 coin cell (rated for roughly two years). Don’t confuse it with the two other “Tap” products: the original Hue Tap Switch was kinetic/battery-free and is discontinued, while the Hue Tap Switch Mini is a smaller remote with its own rotary dial and five configurable buttons - the “Mini” refers to its size, not to a dial-free version. You can either keep it on the Hue Bridge (and pull events into HA via the Hue integration, which is local) or pair it directly to your own Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA coordinator. It shines for light/scene control specifically; it’s not a universal remote.
Philips Hue Dimmer Switch
The four-button Hue Dimmer Switch is the simpler sibling to the Tap Dial: no rotary ring, just four buttons on a magnetic mount with long battery life. It is Zigbee, so like the Tap Dial you can leave it on the Hue Bridge and pull its events into Home Assistant, or pair it straight to Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA on your own coordinator. Home Assistant sees press, hold and release on each button, which is enough to map the whole switch to automations. It is the standard answer to the smart-bulb-behind-a-dumb-switch problem: stick it on the wall by the door and the bulbs have a control surface again.
Bluetooth buttons
One more radio is worth a mention, with a condition attached.
Shelly BLU Button1
The Shelly BLU Button1 is a pocket-sized Bluetooth button that reports single, double, triple and long press, so one button covers four separate actions. It is about the cheapest way to scatter physical triggers around a house. The condition is the one that applies to every Shelly BLU device: it reaches Home Assistant through a Shelly BLU gateway or an ESPHome Bluetooth proxy, so it is only worth buying once one of those is in range. If you already have that infrastructure, the cost per trigger is hard to beat.
Z-Wave buttons
If your hub already has a Z-Wave radio, you do not need to add Zigbee just to get a button.
Zooz ZEN34 Remote Switch
The Zooz ZEN34 Remote Switch is a battery-powered Z-Wave remote shaped like an ordinary paddle switch, so it reads as a real wall control rather than a plastic remote. It mounts anywhere with adhesive, which makes it the usual answer for adding a second switch point to a three-way setup without pulling a traveler wire. It pairs locally through Z-Wave JS, supports multi-tap scene events, and can drive another Z-Wave device directly through Direct Association, with the hub out of the path entirely. It has no relay of its own, so it switches other devices rather than a load at its own box, and being battery powered it does not repeat for your mesh. If you want a five-button wall controller instead of a paddle, the mains-powered Zooz ZEN32 Scene Controller is the sibling to look at.
Matter-over-Thread buttons
This is the newest category, and the one that changed most recently. IKEA has discontinued its RODRET and STYRBAR Zigbee remotes - the RODRET is gone from the US site entirely, and the STYRBAR is down to last-chance clearance stock ($14.99, checked August 2026) and replaced them with a Matter device, so the cheapest mainstream button brand is now a Thread brand rather than a Zigbee one. (Its Zigbee SOMRIG shortcut button is still listed in the US, but as last-chance stock - fine to buy if you see one, not something to plan around.)
IKEA BILRESA Dual Button
The BILRESA is a two-button remote that joins your Thread network and is controlled locally through a Matter controller - Home Assistant works as one. There is no IKEA hub and no cloud account in the path, and at around $7 it is the cheapest button in this guide. What you do need is a Thread border router and a Matter controller already running. One caveat worth knowing before you buy: Home Assistant currently exposes the BILRESA as a generic event entity rather than as proper device triggers. You build automations from that entity’s state and its press-type attribute (single press, double press, long press and long release) instead of picking the button out of the device-trigger list, and community blueprints exist that wrap this up for you. It works and it is fully local, but it is a rougher setup than a Zigbee button’s ready-made triggers.
The wired exception: Shelly Plus i4
One Shelly belongs in this guide even though it is not a battery remote. The Shelly Plus i4 has four dry-contact inputs and no relay at all; it exists to turn wired wall switches and dumb buttons into single, double and long-press events in Home Assistant. It needs mains power and wiring, so treat it as a wall-input device rather than something you stick to a nightstand.
Zigbee keypads for scene control
A single button gets you a fixed set of actions (single, double, long press), and you build the “scene” logic in Home Assistant rather than on the device. A keypad or panel puts more surfaces on one device, so a bedside, an entryway, or a kitchen can fire a whole scene - lights, blinds, a “good night” routine - with one press, no phone and no voice. The market is full of mislabeled products, so these are the ones that are Zigbee, battery-powered where it matters, and well-supported in Home Assistant.
The best stick-anywhere Zigbee scene controllers are the Aqara Wireless Remote Switch H1 (the double-rocker version, up to seven actions) and the Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch (the one with a dimming dial), both covered above. For a cheap, discreet trigger, the Third Reality Smart Button above or the SONOFF SNZB-01P. For a permanent wall panel with a screen, the wired Aqara Scene Panel S1. None of the keypad picks are ones I run; they come from the spec sheets and reports from the Home Assistant forums.
SONOFF SNZB-01P
The Sonoff SNZB-01P is another cheap Zigbee 3.0 button with single, double, and long-press actions and a magnetic wall mount. It works with any Zigbee 3.0 coordinator and integrates well with Home Assistant via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. It’s a no-frills choice for adding scene triggers around the house. I haven’t run this one; the pick is based on the spec sheet and what other Home Assistant users report.
Aqara Scene Panel S1 (wired touchscreen, not a button pad)
The Scene Panel S1 is worth including, but set expectations: it’s not a battery button keypad. It’s a wired Zigbee 3.0 in-wall control panel with a 3.95-inch color touchscreen (it replaces a wall switch and needs line power; many regions require a neutral). On screen you get customizable scene tiles rather than physical buttons. It pairs over ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and is highly configurable from Home Assistant. Note it ships with Chinese/English UI only. One buying note: the S1 (model ZNCJMB14LM) is not on Aqara’s US product lineup, which lists the Touchscreen Switch S100 US in its place, so buying one in the US means import stock rather than a current Aqara US SKU. Choose this when you want a permanent, screen-based scene hub on the wall - not when you want a cheap stick-anywhere button. The Z-Wave keypad: Zooz ZEN32
The Zooz ZEN32 Scene Controller comes up constantly in this category, so to be clear: it’s a Z-Wave wall controller with one large paddle plus four small scene buttons (each button supports multiple tap patterns). It’s excellent with Home Assistant via Z-Wave JS, and with Hubitat - but it is not Zigbee and won’t join a Zigbee network. Pick it only if you have a Z-Wave radio.
How to choose a keypad
For “stick it anywhere” flexibility, choose a battery Zigbee button (Aqara H1, Third Reality, Sonoff SNZB-01P). For a permanent wall control surface, the wired Aqara Scene Panel S1. If you want dimming in the same device, the Hue Tap Dial Switch is the standout. Confirm the device is Zigbee if you’re on a Zigbee coordinator; the Zooz ZEN32 needs Z-Wave. All the Zigbee picks pair via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT and you build the scenes in Home Assistant. Match the protocol to your hub and any of these will give you fast, fully local scene control.
Getting clear feedback from a button
A quick reality check: true haptic (vibration) feedback is very rare in smart home buttons and switches. Most Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Matter buttons confirm a press with a physical click, an LED, or by simply doing what you asked. There is no common “haptic module” you wire to a smart plug, and smart speakers, thermostats, and light bulbs do not vibrate. So instead of chasing a feature that mostly doesn’t exist, here is the feedback you can get: physical button feel, LED confirmation, audible cues, and haptics on your phone. Together they make a smart control feel responsive.
Physical feel
The most reliable “feedback” is mechanical. A button with a crisp, tactile click tells your finger the press registered, with no electronics required. Wireless scene buttons with a real mechanical action include the SONOFF SNZB-01P (distinct click, CR2477 battery) and the Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch (four physical buttons plus a dial). These give a clear tactile response on every press even though they don’t vibrate. For a nightstand, bedside Zigbee buttons with a good click are ideal. For wall control, the Aqara Light Switch H2 (US) is a Zigbee/Thread (Matter-capable) switch with physical paddles and per-button LED indicators. The paddle gives mechanical feedback; the LED gives visual confirmation that the command was sent.
LEDs and sound
Many smart buttons and switches include a status LED that blinks on press or shows device state. This is the closest most gear gets to “feedback” beyond the click itself. The Aqara Light Switch H2 lights an LED per button, and the Zooz ZEN34 above has an LED that confirms multi-tap scene presses. In Home Assistant or Hubitat you can also drive a separate indicator light as confirmation: when a button event fires, flash a nearby lamp or LED strip briefly.
Sound is an effective stand-in for haptics, especially for actions you can’t see. When a button press fires an automation, have Home Assistant play a short chime on a media player or speaker, or use a small Zigbee/Z-Wave siren at low volume as a “ding.” This is useful for confirming things like “garage door closing” or “scene activated,” where a quiet beep removes the doubt of wondering whether the press worked.
Phone haptics for on-screen buttons
If your “buttons” are tiles in an app rather than physical devices, real haptic feedback is available, but it comes from your phone, not the smart home device. The Home Assistant Companion app can trigger your phone’s vibration motor: on Android, send a notification through the notify.mobile_app_* service with a vibrationPattern in its data, so a dashboard action or a button press gets a physical confirmation. On iOS, the Shortcuts app has a Vibrate Device action you can drop into any shortcut, and the Home app gives you the usual haptic tap when you toggle a control tile. This is the only widely available source of real vibration feedback in a typical smart home, and it only applies to on-screen controls.
You may see claims that smart plugs “send vibrations,” that HomePods or Echo speakers provide haptic feedback, or that thermostats vibrate to confirm input. None of that is real: smart plugs switch power, speakers play audio, and thermostats use touchscreens or dials with on-screen or audible feedback. Don’t buy hardware expecting a vibration feature it doesn’t have.
Hubs vs. buttons
You don’t buy a button by buying a hub. To use any Zigbee button you need a Zigbee coordinator - that can be a USB stick (Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2, Sonoff/SMLIGHT dongles) running ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. Z-Wave is a separate radio: if you ever add Z-Wave gear, Home Assistant talks to it through Z-Wave JS and its own stick, such as the Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2. What you don’t want for the Zigbee buttons above is a Z-Wave coordinator - and a SmartThings-style all-in-one box like the Aeotec Smart Home Hub isn’t the answer either, since it’s cloud-first and doesn’t act as a local Z-Wave adapter for HA.
Quick verdict
The all-round local button is the Aqara Wireless Mini Switch (or the H1 if you want a nicer click and dial-free multi-press). The cheapest reliable Zigbee button is the Third Reality Smart Button: Zigbee, plentiful, AAA-powered. Already on Hue and want dimming, the Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch. Already on Z-Wave, the Zooz ZEN34 Remote Switch, a battery paddle you can stick anywhere with no Zigbee radio needed. The cheapest local button of the lot is the IKEA BILRESA Dual Button, about $7 over Matter-over-Thread, if you already run a Thread border router and can live with an event-entity automation. And if you’re already running a Shelly BLU gateway or BLE proxy, the Shelly BLU Button1 gives four distinct actions from one cheap Bluetooth button. For a whole-scene control surface, the wired Aqara Scene Panel S1 puts scene tiles on the wall, and the SONOFF SNZB-01P is another cheap Zigbee trigger; both are in the keypads section.
Whatever you pick, confirm it’s Zigbee, pair it to a local coordinator with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT, and your button presses will keep firing automations whether or not the internet is up.
