This is the newer version. It replaces the Shelly Plus 1, which stays in the catalog. 4.5/5 I own and tested the previous version - read the hands-on review.

Shelly 1 Gen4, a hardwired relay module small enough to sit behind a wall switch

Quick verdict

The Shelly 1 Gen4 is the current generation of Shelly's basic in-wall relay and the part that replaces the discontinued Shelly Plus 1. The core is unchanged: a module small enough to hide behind an existing switch, potential-free contacts for the load, and a local RPC API plus MQTT with no Shelly account. What is new is the radio choice. It ships Matter-certified over Wi-Fi, and five presses of the device button move it to a Zigbee 3.0 profile in which it also repeats the mesh. Only one profile runs at a time, so pick the network you want and leave it there. It still does not meter - that is the 1PM Gen4 - and it still needs a neutral at the box. I haven't run this one; the notes come from Shelly's spec sheet, the Home Assistant integration docs and what other owners report.

Standout: A dry-contact in-wall relay that can join Home Assistant over Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Matter - whichever radio profile you set it to at install time.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: shelly integration, Local Push, Platinum on the quality scale (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)
  • Zigbee2MQTT: supported device, listed as Shelly S4SW-001X16EU (1 Gen 4) (zigbee2mqtt.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • potential-free (dry) relay contacts, so it can switch a circuit that is not fed from the module's own line
  • three local paths into Home Assistant: the official Shelly integration over Wi-Fi, ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT in Zigbee mode, or Matter
  • repeats the Zigbee mesh when it is in the Zigbee profile rather than sitting on it as an end device
  • tiny enough to hide behind an existing switch, so the wall control keeps working exactly as it did

Reasons to hesitate

  • one radio profile at a time: it ships in the Matter-over-Wi-Fi profile and five presses of the device button switch it to Zigbee, which takes Wi-Fi and Matter away
  • no power or energy metering - it reports only an internal temperature; the 1PM Gen4 is the metered version of the same module
  • the module is supplied from line and neutral, so it needs a neutral in the box (the potential-free output is a separate matter from how the device is powered)
  • an in-wall mains install, not a beginner project

Best for

  • keeping an existing wall switch while putting the circuit it controls under local Home Assistant control
  • installs that need isolated dry contacts rather than a switched live output
  • households that have not settled on Wi-Fi versus Zigbee and want to decide at install time

Avoid if

  • you need power or energy metering on the circuit - the 1PM Gen4 is the model that meters
  • the switch box has no neutral
  • you expect Wi-Fi and Zigbee to run at the same time on one device
  • you are not comfortable working with mains wiring

Privacy and local-control notes

Local in every profile it can run: the Wi-Fi firmware has a built-in web interface, an RPC API and MQTT with no Shelly account required, Zigbee mode talks only to your own coordinator, and Matter is local by design. Shelly cloud is opt-in.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Shelly (official core integration, Local Push) over Wi-Fi with the local RPC API or MQTT; ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT when switched to the Zigbee profile; Matter integration in the default Matter profile.

Buying reality check

Price notes: Shelly's own US store listed the UL-certified SKU at $27.99 and in stock on 2026-09-08, with a 2-pack at $54.86 and a 4-pack at $106.36. The US listing is the 15 A UL variant; Shelly's general spec sheet for the non-UL model reads 16 A at 240 V, so check which SKU is in the cart.

What changed for this product

  1. · Brief

Shelly at IFA 2026: ThreadLink, a Matter wall panel, and a EUR 39.90 camera

Shelly's IFA 2026 announcements: ThreadLink turns the Gen4 Thread radio into a full IP network, firmware 2.8.0 makes the Wall Display a Matter controller, and a EUR 39.90 camera does RTSP. What is local, what is not.

  2. · Added

Shelly 1 Gen4 and 2PM Gen4 now have product pages

The guides have named these two as the parts to buy since Shelly discontinued the Gen2 Plus line, but neither had a page, so the only clickable relay link in those sentences still went to the superseded Plus model. Both now have pages with dated sources: the Shelly 1 Gen4 (potential-free contacts, no metering, $27.99 for the UL-certified US SKU) and the Shelly 2PM Gen4 (two metered channels, 10 A each and 16 A total, $39.99 - less than the Plus 2PM cost). Each ships in a Matter-over-Wi-Fi profile and switches to Zigbee with five presses of the device button, one radio at a time. I have run neither, and both pages say so.
