Aqara Smart Lock U400, a deadbolt smart lock with fingerprint reader and keypad

Quick verdict

The U400 is Aqara's Matter over Thread deadbolt, so lock, unlock, PIN codes and schedules reach Home Assistant locally with no Aqara hub. Fingerprint and NFC credentials, door position and logs don't come across over Matter, and auto-lock lives in the Aqara app. UWB hands-free unlock is an Apple feature that needs an Apple home hub. I run a U400 on my front door; I haven't published a review of it yet.

Standout: A Matter over Thread deadbolt with UWB hands-free unlock, Home Key, fingerprint and keypad, charged over USB-C without removing the battery.

Local control facts

Why it stands out

  • Matter over Thread lock that Aqara says works with Home Assistant, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings without an Aqara hub
  • UWB hands-free unlock and Apple Wallet Home Key, plus fingerprint, keypad codes, NFC card and a mechanical key
  • rechargeable battery rated up to 6 months that charges over USB-C indoors without removing it

Reasons to hesitate

  • over Matter, Home Assistant gets PIN codes and schedules but not fingerprint or NFC credentials, door position or event logs, per Matter Survey
  • UWB hands-free unlock needs a supported iPhone or Apple Watch and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub
  • auto-lock and Night Latch are configured in the Aqara Home app rather than over Matter

Best for

  • Home Assistant houses with a Thread border router that want local lock control and Apple Home Key
  • replacing a single-cylinder deadbolt with keypad, fingerprint and phone unlock

Avoid if

  • you need fingerprint or NFC enrolment managed from Home Assistant
  • you have no Thread border router

Privacy and local-control notes

Lock and unlock run over Matter over Thread, so Home Assistant controls the lock on your own network through a Thread border router. Settings such as auto-lock and Night Latch are set in the Aqara Home app.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: matter.
