Aqara Motion Sensor P1 - Zigbee PIR motion and light sensor with a configurable detection lockout and long battery life
Owner’s hands-on review ★★★☆☆

Too Slow For Me - but if speed doesn't matter...

I’ll start off by saying: This has been a pretty solid performer for me when it comes to reliably sending motion updates to home assistant.

The issue? It’s slow to send those updates to home assistant. I was hoping I could point a couple of these at doorways to turn on lights as people entered a room, opened a door, etc. Unfortunately they’re just too slow - you can be halfway across the room, down the hallway, etc. before the lights kick on. In my testing I saw upwards of a 5-10 second response pretty regularly (Normally, they’re faster, but the random delays are frustrating)

They have good battery life, decent reliability, and the update speed, while not unique to me, is not a highly reported issue. If you can snag them on sale they might be worth it, though a lot of mmWave devices are about the same price now if you want presence in addition to motion.

Quick verdict

The Motion Sensor P1 is Aqara's Zigbee PIR sensor with a built-in light meter and, crucially, a configurable detection lockout so you are not stuck with a fixed cooldown. It pairs locally through zigbee2mqtt or ZHA. It is PIR, not presence, so it catches movement rather than stillness, but for motion-triggered lighting with long battery life it is excellent.

Standout: Zigbee PIR motion and light sensor with a configurable detection lockout and very long battery life.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: zha integration, Local Polling (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)
  • Zigbee2MQTT: supported device, listed as Aqara RTCGQ14LM (Motion sensor P1) (zigbee2mqtt.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • configurable detection lockout (down to 2 seconds in zigbee2mqtt), unlike the fixed cooldown on cheaper PIR sensors
  • includes a built-in light level sensor alongside motion
  • very long battery life (Aqara rates up to 5 years) on 2 CR2450 cells

Reasons to hesitate

  • PIR motion only, not mmWave presence detection like the FP series
  • requires a Zigbee coordinator (Aqara officially supports only their own hub, but ZHA/zigbee2mqtt work well)
  • Xiaomi/Aqara Zigbee devices can occasionally drop off non-Aqara meshes

Best for

  • Zigbee Home Assistant setups wanting motion plus light level with a tunable cooldown
  • battery-conscious motion automations where 5-year battery life matters

Avoid if

  • you need still-presence detection rather than movement
  • you have no Zigbee coordinator and do not want one

Privacy and local-control notes

Pure Zigbee device with no cloud component. Fully local when paired to a Zigbee coordinator via zigbee2mqtt or ZHA.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: zigbee2mqtt / ZHA.
