What Makes a Good Matter over Thread Bulb

Thread creates a low-power 802.15.4 mesh network. Mains-powered Thread devices act as routers and relay traffic for each other, so coverage tends to improve as you add devices. Because Thread bulbs aren’t on Wi-Fi, they don’t consume Wi-Fi client slots or compete for airtime with your phones and laptops.

That said, Thread only works if you have a Thread border router on your network. For Home Assistant, the practical options are:

• A Thread radio attached to Home Assistant itself. The Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is a USB stick whose firmware can be switched to Thread; combined with the Thread and Matter integrations, HA becomes a border router. (The older Connect ZBT-1, formerly SkyConnect, was discontinued in November 2025 and replaced by the ZBT-2 - existing ZBT-1 sticks still work and get updates, but new buyers should get the ZBT-2.) Note it runs either Zigbee or Thread firmware, not both at once.
• Home Assistant Yellow, which has a built-in Silicon Labs 802.15.4 radio that can run Thread (discontinued October 2025 - fine if you already own one, but don’t pay a premium for old stock).

Important: Home Assistant Green has no built-in radio. To use Thread (or Zigbee) with a Green you must add a USB stick such as the Connect ZBT-2. Without a border router somewhere on the network, Thread bulbs can’t be commissioned onto a mesh.

The WiZ A19 Color is one: it is Matter-certified, but it connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not Thread, so it joins your Wi-Fi network as a normal client. They work and they’re cheap, but you don’t get a Thread mesh, and each bulb is another Wi-Fi client. If your goal is a Thread backbone, prefer Thread-native bulbs.

Whatever you pick, get your Thread border router sorted first. On a Home Assistant Green that means adding a Connect ZBT-2 stick; on the (now-discontinued) Yellow the radio is already built in.
