Apple's Home Collection and HomeView: what stays local and what doesn't

Apple's October 2026 launch: a $299 HomeView display and LG/Schneider cameras, a lock, and thermostats. Which pieces are Matter, and which only work through Apple.

Apple announced two things on 13 October: HomeView, a $299 tabletop or wall-mounted screen with Siri AI built in, and Apple Home Collection, a lineup of cameras, a video doorbell, a lock, and two thermostats built with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. HomeView goes on sale November 13; the Home Collection accessories start in December, with some not until early 2027. Nobody outside Apple has tested any of it yet. The question I care about is which pieces reach Home Assistant on their own, and which only work inside Apple’s house.

Short version: the lock, both thermostats, and the temperature sensors are Matter compatible, which on paper lets them join a Home Assistant Matter fabric the way any other Matter device does, alongside or instead of Apple Home. Apple’s release never calls the four cameras or the video doorbell Matter compatible, and camera monitoring needs an Apple hub (HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K) plus iCloud+ for storage. HomeView is a screen and a Siri AI speaker; Apple never says it has a Thread radio or acts as a border router, which the existing HomePod mini, full-size HomePod and most Apple TV 4K models already do. Nothing here changes my picks yet, because nothing has shipped.

Apple says the collection starts in December 2026 and that “select accessories” follow in early 2027, without saying which ones, so treat any single date above as the earliest possible.

Every one needs a recent iPhone for the initial NFC-tap setup and lives in the Apple Home app, with no separate app or account.

Apple HomeView

A $299 screen, tabletop or wall-mounted, with a 7-inch display, a speaker base, and the new “Siri AI.” It recognizes up to six faces and gives each person their own home screen. Pre-orders opened 13 October; it ships 13 November in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the UK, and the US. Apple’s release says it is “not available for sale in the European Union, as Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU.”

HomeView can control cameras, thermostats, lights, locks, and blinds by touch or voice, and plays doorbell chimes. Apple’s release never says it has a Thread radio, and never calls it a Thread border router or a Matter controller by name. Home Assistant’s own documentation already lists four Apple Thread border routers: the HomePod mini, the full-size HomePod (2nd generation), the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), and the 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K in its Wi-Fi + Ethernet trim. HomeView isn’t on that list, at least not yet.

What stays local, what doesn’t

The lock, thermostats, and sensors: Matter first

Apple’s release states plainly that the LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, both Smart Thermostats, and both Temperature Sensors are Matter compatible. Home Assistant’s Matter integration runs over local push, and its own docs describe joining one Matter device to Google Home, Apple Home, and Home Assistant at the same time, since the spec expects every device to support at least five fabrics. That makes these four products, on paper, candidates to join a Home Assistant Matter fabric on their own, independent of an Apple hub. What I can’t confirm: whether Apple’s one-tap NFC setup flow hands over a standard Matter pairing code the way other Matter devices do, or locks you into Apple Home first. Nobody has one in hand to test.

The lock also supports Aliro, a separate CSA standard built on Apple’s Home Key technology for the phone-to-lock handshake (NFC for the tap, Bluetooth for approach, Ultra Wideband for hands-free unlock). Aliro and Matter are independent: a lock can carry both labels, and Aliro governs who gets in, while Matter governs how Home Assistant or any other hub talks to the lock. The proximity auto-unlock stays an Apple/Google/Samsung-wallet feature either way, not something Home Assistant will drive.

The cameras and doorbell: Apple’s ecosystem only

Apple’s release never calls any of the four cameras or the video doorbell Matter compatible, even in a lineup where the thermostats and lock get that label explicitly. Camera monitoring needs a home hub (HomeView, HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV 4K), and video history lives in iCloud+, with a 50GB plan covering one camera and a 2TB plan covering unlimited cameras. There’s no documented path from these cameras into Home Assistant, Frigate, or anything outside Apple Home.

The “every device supports Thread” line in Apple’s release, which describes the whole lineup, sits oddly next to cameras never called Matter devices anywhere else in the document. I read that as marketing copy outrunning the product list, not a claim that the cameras will show up on a Thread network the way a Matter bulb does.

HomeView: a screen first, a hub second

HomeView works with “Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories,” per Apple, the same phrasing used for HomePod and Apple TV. That fits it acting as a Home hub inside Apple’s own app. What it doesn’t confirm is a Thread radio, the piece that would make it relevant to a Home Assistant house running Thread border routers. I run a second-generation Apple TV 4K as my own Apple hub, which the Home Assistant docs already list as a Thread border router; HomeView isn’t on that list yet, because nobody outside Apple has one to check.

Buy, wait or ignore

Home Assistant house. Wait. HomeView ships November 13, but it’s a display and Apple Home hub, not one of the Matter devices in question here. The lock and thermostats don’t ship until December at the earliest, and the one meaningful local-control question, whether the lock and thermostats join a Home Assistant Matter fabric cleanly, has no answer yet. If you need a lock or thermostat today, the picks on the smart lock guide and the local thermostat guide haven’t changed.

Apple or Google Home house. The lock and thermostats are a reasonable bet once they ship, since Matter compatibility is explicit from Apple. The cameras and doorbell tie you into iCloud+ for storage, the same way Ring or Arlo ties you into its own cloud; budget for a plan if you want more than one camera’s worth of history.

Budget buyer. Skip the cameras. $199.95 to $399.95 per camera plus an iCloud+ plan is not a budget play, and the sensors and thermostats at $39.95 and $199.95 aren’t cheaper than the Z-Wave and Zigbee options I already recommend.

Does this change my picks?
