Shelly Pro 3EM (3x120A Energy Meter)

Shelly

premium HA: excellentFull local control, no cloud needed. Native Home Assistant integration or a local protocol. local: excellentFully controllable on your LAN with no internet dependency. wifiethernetbluetoothmatter

Quick verdict

The go-to local-first whole-home energy meter. The Pro 3EM measures three phases at about 1% accuracy and exposes everything over a local RPC/MQTT API, and Home Assistant's Shelly integration (one of its best-maintained) auto-discovers it and wires straight into the Energy dashboard. Matter is supported but only exposes limited energy data versus the native integration, so stick with Shelly local. Note the standard model uses 120A clamps; larger services want the pricier Pro 3EM-400.

Standout: A DIN-rail 3-phase energy meter with a local HTTP/RPC + MQTT API and a top-tier Home Assistant integration that feeds the Energy dashboard directly - no cloud.

Why it stands out

  • Official, top-tier local Home Assistant integration that feeds the Energy dashboard directly
  • Open local API surface (HTTP/RPC, MQTT, WebSocket, Modbus) with on-device data storage
  • True 3-phase measurement at about 1% accuracy, with both WiFi and wired Ethernet

Reasons to hesitate

  • Standard model is capped at 120A CT clamps (need the pricier Pro 3EM-400 for larger services)
  • Matter exposes only limited energy data compared with the native Shelly integration
  • Requires DIN-rail / electrical-panel installation (electrician recommended)

Best for

  • Whole-home energy monitoring on the Home Assistant Energy dashboard, fully local
  • Shelly and local-first users who want an open API

Avoid if

  • You only need a single-circuit plug-in monitor
  • You are not comfortable working inside an electrical panel

Privacy and local-control notes

A Gen2 device with a local HTTP/RPC + MQTT API; the official Home Assistant Shelly integration talks to it directly with no cloud. It can store roughly 60 days of 1-minute data on-device.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Shelly (local RPC).

Buying reality check

Price notes: Around $130-$155 street for the standard 3x120A model. The 3x400A Pro 3EM-400 is higher (about $330).
