NVIDIA Shield TV tube-shaped media player and remote
Owner’s hands-on review ★★★★☆

I liked it, but Apple TV worked better for my household

I give my NVIDIA Shield TV 4/5. This is the standard tube-shaped model. I liked it more than the Roku, Chromecast and media PC I tried before settling on an Apple TV 4K.

I’m more comfortable tinkering with tech than my wife, and the Shield didn’t get her thumbs-up. The Apple TV 4K did. I personally liked the Shield, but it wasn’t the best fit for both of us.

Mine is around seven years old now, and I think it’s due for a refresh. My main complaints are the form factor and the power connection. A tube with plugs on both ends? Who decided that was a good idea?

Quick verdict

I give my standard Shield TV 4/5. I preferred it to the Roku, Chromecast and media PC I tried, but the Apple TV 4K was the better fit for my household. The tube shape and connections at both ends are frustrating.

Standout: Tube-shaped Android TV player with Gigabit Ethernet and microSD expansion.
