Level Bolt, a battery-powered smart deadbolt drive that hides inside an existing door

Quick verdict

The Level Bolt is the lock for people who do not want a smart lock on show. It replaces the bolt mechanism inside a standard deadbolt and leaves the outside of the door, the thumb-turn and your keys as they were. The version Level sells today is Matter over Thread, which is what makes it interesting for Home Assistant: pair it through the Matter integration with a Thread border router near the door and you get a local lock entity with no Level cloud in the loop. The Level Lock+ in this catalogue is no longer sold new, so this is the current retrofit pick. Two cautions. Older Bolts were Bluetooth-only and I could not find a Level statement that they get a Matter update, so check the box says Matter. And Level's own extras, key cards, access codes and history, live in the Level app and its Connect bridge, not in Matter. I haven't run this one; the notes come from the spec sheet, the Home Assistant integration docs and what other owners report.

Standout: Replaces only the inside of a standard American deadbolt, so the door, the thumb-turn and your existing keys all stay exactly as they were.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: matter integration, Local Push (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • completely hidden inside the door: no visible smart-lock hardware, and your existing keys and thumb-turn keep working
  • current version ships with Matter over Thread, which gives Home Assistant a local lock entity through the Matter integration
  • works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through Matter
  • fits standard-profile deadbolts of 0.75 inch or more with 2.375 or 2.75 inch backsets, installed with a screwdriver

Reasons to hesitate

  • the older Bolt was Bluetooth-only and Amazon still sells it as the previous model; Level's pages did not tell me whether those units can be updated to Matter, so treat a non-Matter Bolt as Bluetooth-only
  • Home Assistant needs a Thread border router close to the door, and Matter lock support does not carry Level's own features like key cards or auto-unlock
  • no keypad or fingerprint reader without the separate Level Keypad accessory
  • runs on a single CR2 lithium cell hidden in the bolt, and Level's page gives no battery-life figure

Best for

  • doors where the look of the existing hardware has to stay untouched
  • Home Assistant households that already run a Thread border router
  • Apple Home users who want a hidden lock with a local Matter path

Avoid if

  • you want a keypad, fingerprint reader or Wi-Fi built into the lock
  • you have no Thread border router and do not plan to add one
  • you find a cheap Bolt listed as the previous model and expect Matter from it

Privacy and local-control notes

Lock and unlock over Matter stay on your Thread network and your controller. Level's app talks to the lock over Bluetooth, and Level's own remote features (access codes, key cards, activity history) route through the optional Level Connect Wi-Fi bridge and Level's cloud, which you can skip entirely if Home Assistant is the controller.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Matter (official core integration, Local Push) over Thread; needs a Thread border router near the door. No Level-specific integration, and the Level app's Bluetooth path is not exposed to Home Assistant..

Buying reality check

Price notes: $199 on level.co on 2026-09-06. The Level Keypad for code entry is sold separately, and so is the Level Connect Wi-Fi bridge that Level's own remote features need. Premium for a lock with no keypad or fingerprint reader; the price buys the invisible form factor.

Eight recommended products finally have pages

The guides had been recommending these by name without a product page to back them: the Shelly Plug US Gen4, the Hubitat C-8 Pro, the Zooz ZST39 and Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro Z-Wave sticks, the Level Bolt, the Shelly Dimmer Gen4, the SONOFF SNZB-02P and the Reolink E1 Pro. Each now has compatibility notes with dated sources. I have run none of them, and each page says so.
