Google Nest Thermostat - Matter-ready Google thermostat with smart scheduling via Nest suggestions (no auto-learning)

Quick verdict

The Nest Thermostat is Google's budget model - the 2020 design that sits below the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen - and Matter certification gives it some cross-platform flexibility. But it's still deeply cloud-dependent, and Thread is not enabled on this model, so its Matter link runs over Wi-Fi. Great for Google Home users, frustrating for anyone wanting local control.

Standout: Matter-ready Google thermostat with smart scheduling via Nest suggestions (no auto-learning) and a refined minimal design.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: nest integration, Cloud Push (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • sleek modern design with a clear, readable display
  • Matter support opens up cross-platform potential
  • excellent Google Home integration with smart scheduling and Nest suggestions

Reasons to hesitate

  • high cloud dependency - nearly everything runs through Google's servers
  • Home Assistant integration is cloud-based, not local
  • Thread is not enabled, so Matter connectivity is over Wi-Fi only

Best for

  • Google Home households wanting a well-designed thermostat with smart scheduling
  • users who want Matter support for future-proofing

Avoid if

  • you want fully local thermostat control
  • you want a true auto-learning thermostat - this model only offers suggestions

Privacy and local-control notes

Heavily tied to Google cloud. Thermostat data feeds into Google's ecosystem. Basic scheduling works offline, but all smart features require Google servers.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Google Nest (cloud).

Buying reality check

Price notes: Both the Google Store and Amazon read $99.99 on 2026-09-07 (the Google Store shows $129.99 as the regular price and a $30 discount). Amazon's buy box had read $79.00 on 2026-08-31, so this is a real move up rather than a listing change. Note that it is not compatible with Nest Temperature Sensors at all - the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd and 4th gen and the Nest Thermostat E support those.

Verified price reads: lowest seen $79, latest $99.99 on Sep 7, 2026.

29 product corrections after a source audit of 82 products

Every rating and spec sentence on 82 products was checked against the manufacturer page and the Home Assistant integration docs. Twenty-nine claims were wrong and are now fixed: six products rated a tier too kindly for cloud-only devices, two rated too harshly (the August lock has a local Bluetooth path; the Roomba integration is local push), a phantom Ethernet port, a sealed lithium backup described as two AA cells. Every product page now shows the sources it was checked against, and a link to report an error.
