Quick verdict
Most smart thermostats are one device doing one job. The W200 is a Matter 1.4 thermostat that also runs a Thread border router and an Aqara Zigbee bridge, which means it can replace a separate border router if you were going to buy one. Home Assistant sees it over the native Matter integration, so day-to-day control is local. Two limits worth knowing before you buy: the Zigbee side only accepts Aqara's own devices, and Aqara says it covers about 85% of HVAC systems - line voltage, millivolt and 0-10VDC are out.
Standout: A Matter thermostat that doubles as a Thread border router and an Aqara Zigbee bridge.

Local control facts
Home Assistant: matter integration, Local Push (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)
Why it stands out
a thermostat that is also a Thread border router and mesh extender, so it earns a second job on the network
Matter 1.4, so Home Assistant picks it up over the native Matter integration with local control
built-in Zigbee hub bridges Aqara's own Zigbee sensors without a second box
Reasons to hesitate
the Zigbee bridge is Aqara-only - it is not a general Zigbee coordinator and will not replace ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT
setup and firmware updates run through the Aqara app and account
not compatible with line-voltage, millivolt or 0-10VDC systems
Best for
low-voltage central HVAC owners who also want a Thread border router in the same box
households already running Aqara Zigbee sensors who want them bridged locally
Avoid if
you have electric baseboard or another line-voltage system
you already run Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA and want one general coordinator rather than a vendor bridge
Privacy and local-control notes
Joins Home Assistant as a Matter device over your LAN, so thermostat control is local. Like other Aqara hubs, initial setup and firmware updates go through the Aqara app, which is where the cloud dependency sits. Its Zigbee side bridges Aqara's own Zigbee devices; third-party Zigbee gear cannot join it.
Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Matter (native HA Matter integration, local); also acts as a Thread border router and an Aqara Zigbee bridge.
