Shelly Wall Display XL control panel
Owner’s hands-on review ★★★★☆

Expensive, Slow, but I like it anyway.

This is basically what feels like a 2016 Android tablet trying to run a modern operating system. It’s slow, and things like dimmer sliders in home assistant dashboards require a click, not a drag to operate well (At least at the time of this review). But honestly, the fact that it replaces a switch (Neutral required), and I had the perfect spot for it in my house makes me love it. The tablet on the wall I could never make look right, and this replaced two hue dimmer switches and a wall switch, on top of displaying a dashboard created for it.

Is it worth the price? No. Would I buy it again? Yes.

Quick verdict

The Shelly Wall Display XL is a 10.1-inch in-wall panel that replaces a wall switch (neutral required) and can show a Home Assistant dashboard through its built-in Home Assistant page, which loads the dashboard URL you give it. Shelly briefly deprecated that page in favour of a separate Home Assistant app on the device, then restored it in firmware 2.7.0 after users pushed back, so check the firmware notes before you rely on it. The relay side integrates locally through the native Shelly integration over Wi-Fi 6. It is expensive and the interface can feel slow, but for a permanent, good-looking wall dashboard that also controls a load, it is a compelling local-first option.

Standout: A 10.1-inch in-wall touchscreen that doubles as a Home Assistant dashboard and a switch replacement, controlled locally via the Shelly integration.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: shelly integration, Local Push, Platinum on the quality scale (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • large 10.1-inch in-wall touchscreen for dashboards and local control
  • built-in relay replaces a wall switch (neutral required)
  • fully local via the native Shelly Home Assistant integration, Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth

Reasons to hesitate

  • expensive at around $350
  • the on-device UI can feel sluggish and firmware is still maturing
  • needs a neutral wire; the power base mounts to a standard US switch box, but the 10.1-inch panel (about 6.1 by 10.7 inches) sits on the wall in front of it

Best for

  • a permanent wall-mounted Home Assistant dashboard that also replaces a switch
  • Shelly users who want a large local control panel instead of a propped-up tablet

Avoid if

  • you want something cheap or a simple on/off switch
  • you need a small, fast, mature panel today

Privacy and local-control notes

Shelly devices support fully local control via their HTTP/RPC API and the native Shelly Home Assistant integration. No cloud account required; the Shelly Cloud app is optional.

  1. · Brief

Shelly at IFA 2026: ThreadLink, a Matter wall panel, and a EUR 39.90 camera

Shelly's IFA 2026 announcements: ThreadLink turns the Gen4 Thread radio into a full IP network, firmware 2.8.0 makes the Wall Display a Matter controller, and a EUR 39.90 camera does RTSP. What is local, what is not.

  2. · Corrected

Shelly follow-up audit and 16 more corrections

Six more Shelly products went through the same source check as the rest of the catalog. The Plus i4’s inputs are mains-level, not dry-contact (the DC model is the low-voltage one). The BLU Motion, BLU Button1 and BLU Door/Window pages no longer say a Shelly gateway is required: a Bluetooth adapter on the Home Assistant host or any Bluetooth proxy hears them directly. The Wall Display XL mounts to a standard switch box, and its dashboard claim now says exactly what Shelly ships: a Home Assistant page that loads a dashboard URL, deprecated and then restored in firmware 2.7.0. Five manufacturer links that had gone dead were replaced, the ZEN04 price was refreshed, the Tedee GO page names the official tedee integration as its non-Thread local path, and the G6 Instant page notes its IPX5 rating.
