Best Z-Wave water valves for automatic shutoff

The Zooz ZAC36 Titan and Dome DMWV1 are the two clamp-on Z-Wave water shut-off valves worth buying - what each one fits, plus the pricier Greenfield.

A leak sensor tells you the floor is wet. A valve does something about it. Pairing the two is the one automation in a smart home that can pay for the whole hobby in a single night, and Z-Wave is a sensible radio for it: the mesh is separate from your Wi-Fi, and a mains-powered valve actuator repeats signal for everything else.

Two clamp-on Z-Wave actuators are worth most people’s money, and neither needs a plumber. A third, the Greenfield, is real but costs several times as much and fits far fewer pipes; it gets its own section below. What follows is what each one fits, what it costs you in wiring and outlets, and which supporting Z-Wave devices people mistake for valves.

Buy the Zooz ZAC36 Titan if you want the stronger clamp-on actuator for your main, or the Dome DMWV1 for the same idea at less money if you can live with a plastic body and a slower motor. Neither needs a plumber. I haven’t run either one on my own main; the picks rest on the spec sheets, the retailer listings, and other owners’ write-ups.

Choosing the right Z-Wave water valve

Z-Wave water valves are designed to cut off water flow to specific fixtures or zones in your home. They can be integrated with a Z-Wave hub and controlled via automation rules, schedules, or even voice commands. Pick a valve that’s compatible with your existing ecosystem, reliable, and easy to install.

Every Z-Wave water valve needs a Z-Wave controller. On Home Assistant that means the Z-Wave JS integration plus a Z-Wave adapter such as the Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2, a Zooz ZST39 or an Aeotec Z-Stick. Note that the Aeotec Smart Home Hub is a rebadged SmartThings hub rather than a Home Assistant Z-Wave adapter: it reaches Home Assistant through a cloud-dependent bridge, so skip it if local control is the whole point. HomeKit has no Z-Wave radio, and neither does a HomePod, so you expose the valve to Apple Home through Home Assistant’s HomeKit Bridge integration. Hubitat speaks Z-Wave natively.

Four things decide which one you buy. Valve type and size: both picks below are clamp-on actuators for ball valves only, so measure the pipe and look at the handle before ordering. Power, because both are mains-powered and there has to be an outlet near the shutoff. Build, since metal versus plastic matters for a device left clamped to a water main for years. And what drives it, because a valve is only useful with a leak sensor and an automation behind it.

Top Z-Wave water valves for home automation

1. Zooz ZAC36 Titan Water Valve Actuator (the pick)

The Titan is a Z-Wave Long Range actuator that clamps onto the ball valve you already have. A fork drops over the valve handle, two clamps grip the pipe, and a screwdriver finishes the job in a few minutes. Zooz rates it for ball valves from 1/2 inch to 1-1/4 inch and explicitly warns against gate valves. It is mains-powered, so you need an outlet near the shutoff, and Home Assistant picks it up through Z-Wave JS as a switch entity plus a binary sensor for the open/closed state - Z-Wave JS has no valve platform, so the automation you write turns that switch off to close the main. Hubitat drives it natively too. Pair it with a Zooz ZSE42 800LR leak sensor and one automation closes the main the instant water is detected.

2. Dome Water Main Shut-Off Valve (the cheaper actuator)

The Dome DMWV1 works the same way: a mounting bracket hose-clamps to the pipe, a control arm grips the valve handle, and the motor turns it. It fits standard ball valves from 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch, needs no plumber, and because it is mains-powered it also repeats Z-Wave signal for the rest of your mesh. The plastic construction is the usual complaint and the motor is slower to actuate, but it is a fully local Z-Wave valve for less money.

The Greenfield clamp-on actuator, and why it is not the pick

Search for a Z-Wave clamp-on valve actuator and the Greenfield Z-Wave Automatic Security Valve Clamp-On Actuator (GFASVCOAZ) comes up. It is a real product and it does the same job: it clamps onto the ball valve you already have, turns the handle on command, and reports back whether the valve is open or closed. No plumber required.

Three things keep it off the shortlist above. The first is price, and whether you can even buy it. It is not sold through the mainstream channels the other two are, and as of 2026-09-04 the two Z-Wave specialist retailers that carried it no longer list the clamp-on actuator at all: the SKU pages return 404 and a site search for GFASVCOAZ returns nothing. What those retailers still stock is the plumbed-in Greenfield kit family, which runs from about $474 to over $1,000 depending on the valve and whether it is gas rated. Either way this is a several-hundred-dollar line next to a Titan or a Dome, and the clamp-on version may simply not be purchasable right now. The second is pipe fit. The brackets mount to copper pipe only, in 3/4 inch or 1 inch. The Titan covers 1/2 inch to 1-1/4 inch and the Dome 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch, without the copper restriction, so if your main is PEX or CPVC, or is 1/2 inch, the Greenfield is out before price even matters. The third is how it joins the mesh. The actuator is not itself a Z-Wave valve; it ships with a FortrezZ MIMOlite, a general-purpose Z-Wave relay-and-input module, and that is the device your hub pairs with. It works, but you are configuring a relay module rather than adding a valve that a hub already knows how to drive.

Greenfield also sells a plumbed-in Automatic Security Valve Kit with a threaded stainless ball valve, in sizes from 1/2 inch to 2 inch. That one replaces a section of pipe, so it is a plumber job rather than a clamp-on, and it is a different product from the actuator above. If you are shopping the clamp-on category, the Titan and the Dome are the two that fit more pipes for less money.

Devices that are not valves (but can drive one)

Three Zooz devices come up constantly in water-shutoff threads. None of them is a water valve, and it is worth being precise about what each one does.

  • Zooz ZEN30 Double Switch does not control two Z-Wave devices. It is one dimmer plus one 15 A on/off relay in a single gang box, sold for fan-and-light combos. The relay can be used as a dry contact, which is what makes it interesting if you are switching a low-voltage motorized valve rather than a battery actuator. It needs in-wall wiring, and it is not a HomeKit device on its own. If a dry contact is all you want, Zooz sells the purpose-built ZEN51.
  • Zooz ZEN32 Scene Controller is a five-button scene controller. It cannot open or close water by itself. Its real use here is a physical “shut the water off” button on the wall that fires a Home Assistant automation, plus an LED you can drive from the leak sensor’s state.
  • Zooz ZEN04 800LR Smart Plug is an 800-series Z-Wave plug with power monitoring. The sensible job for it is cutting power to a leaking appliance, a dishwasher or a washing machine, the moment its leak sensor trips. Do not wire a valve motor through it: Zooz rates the plug for no more than 960W incandescent, 150W LED, 15A resistive or a 1/3 HP fan motor, and warns against motors drawing over 8A, so a valve actuator sits outside its rating.

Z-Wave water valves for HomeKit and Hubitat

If you’re using HomeKit, you’ll need a Z-Wave hub that supports HomeKit integration. HomeKit has no native Z-Wave support, so you bridge a Z-Wave valve through Home Assistant - for example a Home Assistant Green with a Z-Wave USB stick, which can then expose the valve to Apple Home. An Apple HomePod has no Z-Wave radio and cannot control a Z-Wave valve itself.

For Hubitat users, both the Titan and the Dome join natively over Z-Wave with no extra hub. A Zooz ZEN32 Scene Controller near the kitchen door makes a good manual override: one button closes the valve, another reopens it once you have mopped up.

Before you rely on it

A valve is only half the system. Pair it with a detector from the Zigbee leak sensors with shutoff integration roundup, which also covers the automation side.

One last thing worth doing on install day: test it. Trigger the automation by hand, watch the valve actually close, and time how long it takes. Don’t trust a shutoff you have never seen work.
