The Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is fine, but I can’t fully recommend it. I give it 3.5/5. For me, it sits in an awkward middle ground: it isn’t great as a plug-and-play device, and it doesn’t appeal to me as much as a tinkering project built around repurposed Echo hardware.
In my use, it picks up more background noise and starts listening when I haven’t called it more often than an Echo Dot or other Alexa device. Those false activations are my biggest day-to-day complaint.
Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is built for private, local voice control with Assist and is a strong fit for users who want wake-word automation without handing recordings to big-cloud assistants. It is voice-first hardware, so pair it with dashboards or wall tablets if you also need rich visual controls.

You can keep voice processing local using Home Assistant pipelines and compatible hardware, which minimizes third-party data exposure. Actual privacy posture depends on your selected STT/TTS pipeline and whether any cloud fallback is enabled.
