If you’re building a local-first smart home with Home Assistant at the core, a Z-Wave thermostat is one of the safest bets you can make. Z-Wave is low-power, reliable, and—most importantly—fully local: the thermostat talks directly to your Z-Wave controller (a USB stick or hub running Z-Wave JS), with no vendor cloud in the loop. That means your heating and cooling automations keep running even when your internet is down.

One important caveat up front, because a lot of guides get this wrong: many popular “smart thermostats” are not Z-Wave at all. The ecobee Premium is a Wi-Fi device (HomeKit-capable, no Z-Wave and no Thread radio). The tado° Smart Thermostat X is a Matter-over-Thread device (no Z-Wave). Nest and most Honeywell Home “T-series” Wi-Fi models are cloud Wi-Fi. They can be fine thermostats, but they don’t belong in a Z-Wave roundup, and pairing them locally to Home Assistant works very differently (Matter, or a cloud integration). What “Z-Wave thermostat for Home Assistant” actually requires

You need two things: a Z-Wave thermostat, and a Z-Wave controller for Home Assistant (if you don’t have one yet, see how to pick a Z-Wave controller in 2026)—typically a Z-Wave USB stick (such as the Zooz 800-series or an Aeotec Z-Stick) running the Z-Wave JS integration, or a Z-Wave hub. Home Assistant is the controller here; you do not need a HomePod, an Apple TV, or any Apple device to run Z-Wave. (A HomePod cannot act as a Z-Wave controller—it has no Z-Wave radio. It’s a Thread border router, which is a different protocol.) Once the thermostat is included into your Z-Wave network with S2 security, Home Assistant exposes a standard climate entity for setpoints and HVAC mode.

The best Z-Wave thermostats

Honeywell (Resideo) T6 Pro Z-Wave — current SKU TH6320ZW2007

This is the one most people should buy. The T6 Pro Z-Wave is a clean, reliable 7-day programmable thermostat that pairs to Z-Wave JS without fuss—include it, restart Home Assistant if the entity is slow to appear, and you get a proper climate entity. It handles conventional systems (up to 2H/2C) and heat pumps (up to 3H/2C), runs on a C-wire or 3 AA batteries, and uses the included UWP mounting plate for easy install. A security-enabled Z-Wave Plus controller is recommended to get the full feature set. No built-in room sensors and no fancy touchscreen, but for local control it’s exactly what you want.

GoControl GC-TBZ48

A long-standing, no-frills battery-or-C-wire Z-Wave thermostat that’s been a Home Assistant community staple for years. It works with standard and heat-pump systems and includes a C-wire option; when hardwired it also acts as a Z-Wave repeater (in battery mode it won’t). Two things to know: it uses classic Z-Wave rather than Z-Wave Plus, and after pairing it’s worth confirming that its heating and cooling modes map correctly to your HVAC type (heat, cool, or heat pump). It’s a solid, inexpensive pick, though it is discontinued (replaced by the Z-Wave Plus 700-series 2GIG-STZ-1), so you are buying remaining stock or secondhand, and it’s older hardware than the T6 Pro.

Honeywell (Resideo) T6 Pro Z-Wave — the model-number pitfalls

If you want more capability while staying fully local, stick with the T6 Pro Z-Wave family rather than chasing a higher model number. A common buying mistake: there is no Z-Wave version of the Honeywell T10 or T9—those are Wi-Fi/RedLINK thermostats only, so they cannot join your Z-Wave network. The Z-Wave T6 Pro is the Honeywell/Resideo radio you actually want, and it already handles multi-stage conventional and heat-pump systems (up to 3H/2C). The current SKU is TH6320ZW2007 (it replaced the now-discontinued TH6320ZW2003, adding SmartStart QR-code inclusion; the hardware and 3H/2C capability are otherwise identical); both pair the same fully-local way into Z-Wave JS. Confirm the listing says Z-Wave before you order—Honeywell’s Wi-Fi models will not join your Z-Wave network.

A note on other ecosystems

If you also run Hubitat Elevation, these same Z-Wave thermostats include and control locally there as well, so a mixed Hubitat + Home Assistant household can share the same hardware choices. Hubitat is a hub, not a thermostat—pair it with one of the thermostats above. And again: no HomePod or Apple TV is involved in a Z-Wave setup; those are for Matter/Thread or HomeKit, not Z-Wave.

  • Also note: the current T6 Pro Z-Wave SKU is TH6320ZW2007; the older TH6320ZW2003 is the discontinued, identical-hardware predecessor. The Honeywell T10/T9 are Wi-Fi only, so there is no Z-Wave version of them.

Whatever you pick, confirm the listing explicitly says Z-Wave (not Wi-Fi, Thread, or Matter), and make sure you have a Z-Wave controller running Z-Wave JS in Home Assistant. Get those two things right and you’ll have thermostat control that’s fast, local, and cloud-free.
