This is the newer version. It replaces the Shelly Plus Plug US, which stays in the catalog. ★★★☆☆ I own and tested the previous version - read the hands-on review.

Quick verdict

The Plug US Gen4 replaces the Plus Plug US and keeps everything that made that one a Home Assistant favourite: a 15 A relay, real power metering, a local RPC API, MQTT and scripting with no Shelly account. What is new is the radio choice. It ships in a Matter profile on Wi-Fi, and five presses of the button flip it into Zigbee mode where Zigbee2MQTT already has a device definition. Only one profile runs at a time, and the Zigbee profile drops the Wi-Fi firmware extras, so pick the mode that matches your network and leave it there. I haven't run this one; the notes come from the spec sheet, the Home Assistant integration docs and what other owners report.

Standout: One $20-class plug that can join Home Assistant three different local ways: native Shelly integration over Wi-Fi, ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT in Zigbee mode, or Matter.

Local control facts

  • Home Assistant: shelly integration, Local Push, Platinum on the quality scale (home-assistant.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)
  • Zigbee2MQTT: supported device, listed as Shelly S4PL-00116US (Plug US Gen4) (zigbee2mqtt.io, checked Sep 10, 2026)

Why it stands out

  • 15 A / 1800 W rating with voltage, current, power and energy metering plus over-temperature and over-current protection
  • three local paths into Home Assistant: the official Shelly integration over Wi-Fi, ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT in Zigbee mode, or Matter
  • on-device scripting, up to 20 schedules, MQTT and a built-in web interface in the Wi-Fi firmware
  • acts as a Bluetooth proxy for Home Assistant and a Zigbee router when in Zigbee mode

Reasons to hesitate

  • one radio profile at a time: it ships in Matter (Wi-Fi) mode and five presses of the button switch it to Zigbee, losing the scripting and metering extras that live in the Wi-Fi firmware
  • Zigbee2MQTT notes there is no OTA firmware update over Zigbee yet, so you update over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth first
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and early Zigbee firmware showed negative power readings on some units until an update fixed it

Best for

  • Home Assistant users who want energy monitoring on a plug without a cloud account
  • households that have not settled on Wi-Fi versus Zigbee and want a plug that can go either way
  • Apple Home or Google Home users who want a Matter plug that also has a proper local API

Avoid if

  • you expect Zigbee and Wi-Fi at the same time on one device
  • you need a plug that runs on 5 GHz Wi-Fi
  • you want the polished-app experience of a mainstream Matter plug and do not care about metering or scripting

Privacy and local-control notes

Runs fully on the LAN in any of its three profiles: the Wi-Fi firmware has a built-in web interface, RPC API and MQTT with no Shelly account required, Zigbee mode talks only to your coordinator, and Matter is local by design. Shelly cloud is opt-in.

Home Assistant support: supported · integration path: Shelly (official core integration, Local Push) over Wi-Fi with the local RPC API or MQTT; Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA when switched to the Zigbee profile; Matter integration in the default Matter profile.

Buying reality check

Price notes: Budget band. Shelly's own store on Amazon read $24.99 on 2026-09-07, which matches the $24.99 verified on the us.shelly.com Shopify feed on 2026-08-28. Launch coverage in December 2025 put the MSRP under twenty dollars; that figure is stale, so use $24.99. The us.shelly.com listing itself did not render a price on 2026-09-06.

One verified price read so far: $24.99 at amazon on Sep 7, 2026.

What changed for this product

  1. · Brief

Shelly at IFA 2026: ThreadLink, a Matter wall panel, and a EUR 39.90 camera

Shelly's IFA 2026 announcements: ThreadLink turns the Gen4 Thread radio into a full IP network, firmware 2.8.0 makes the Wall Display a Matter controller, and a EUR 39.90 camera does RTSP. What is local, what is not.

  2. · Added

Eight recommended products finally have pages

The guides had been recommending these by name without a product page to back them: the Shelly Plug US Gen4, the Hubitat C-8 Pro, the Zooz ZST39 and Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro Z-Wave sticks, the Level Bolt, the Shelly Dimmer Gen4, the SONOFF SNZB-02P and the Reolink E1 Pro. Each now has compatibility notes with dated sources. I have run none of them, and each page says so.

  3. · Superseded

Shelly has retired the Plus generation; Gen3 and Gen4 replace it

Shelly’s US store now marks the Plus 1, Plus 1 UL, Plus 2PM, Plus Plug US and the original Wall Display as discontinued, each with a named successor: the 1 Gen3 and 1 Gen4, the 2PM Gen3, the Plug US Gen4 and the Wall Display X1i. The product pages say so and link forward. Plus units you own keep working and keep their local API.
